Role of a Food Box Program: In Fruit and Vegetable Consumption and Food Security

Abstract

Purpose: We examined whether participation in a food box program has a positive effect on fruit and vegetable consumption and food security.
Methods: Participants and nonparticipants in a food box program were surveyed to determine differences between the two groups and change over time.
Results: Fruit and vegetable intake declined in those who left the program after several months, and intake of fruit, carrots, and vegetables was lower among those who had left than among those who remained in the program. Food insecurity was associated with lower intakes of fruit and vegetables.
Conclusions: Participation in a food box program can provide some benefit in terms of increased fruit and vegetable consumption for those who use the program regularly. Increasing the frequency of the box and encouraging continued use may improve these effects.

Résumé

Objectif: Nous avons examiné si la participation à un programme de paniers alimentaires avait un impact positif sur la consommation de légumes et fruits ainsi que sur la sécurité alimentaire.
Méthodes: Des participants et non-participants à un programme de paniers alimentaires ont été sondés afin de déterminer la différence entre ces deux groupes et les changements qui se produisent au fil du temps.
Résultats: La consommation de légumes et fruits a diminué chez les gens qui ont quitté le programme après plusieurs mois, et la consommation de fruits, de carottes et de légumes était plus faible chez ceux qui avaient quitté le programme comparativement à ceux qui demeuraient dans le programme. De plus, l’insécurité alimentaire était associée à une plus faible consommation de légumes et fruits.
Conclusions: La participation à un programme de paniers alimentaires peut offrir certains avantages tels une consommation accrue de fruits et légumes à ceux qui l’utilisent régulièrement. L’augmentation de la fréquence à laquelle les gens peuvent avoir accès à un panier et la promotion d’une utilisation continue du programme pourraient en améliorer les effets.
