Development and Initial Reliability Testing of NAK-50+: A Nutrition Attitude and Knowledge Questionnaire for Adults 50+ Years of Age

Abstract

Purpose: Few questionnaires to test nutrition knowledge and attitudes of older adults living independently in the community have been developed and tested to assess self-management tools such as Nutri-eSCREEN and other education programs. This study is a first step in the development of a questionnaire designed to evaluate the nutrition knowledge and attitudes of independent older adults (NAK-50+).
Methods: The steps involved in this study were: (i) drafting initial questions based on the content of the Nutri-eSCREEN education material, (ii) using cognitive interviewing to determine if these questions were understandable and relevant (n = 9 adults ≥50 years of age), and (iii) completing test–retest reliability in a convenient community sample (n = 60 adults ≥50 years of age). Intra-class coefficients (ICC) and kappa were used to determine reliability.
Results: A 33-item questionnaire resulted from this development and analysis. ICC for the total score was 0.68 indicating good agreement and thus initial reliability.
Conclusions: NAK-50+ is a face valid and reliable questionnaire that assesses nutrition knowledge and attitudes in independent adults aged ≥50 years. Further work to determine construct validity and to refine the questionnaire is warranted. Availability of the questionnaire for this age group will support rigorous evaluation of education and self-management interventions for this segment of the population.

Résumé

Objectif. Peu de questionnaires relatifs aux connaissances en nutrition et à l’attitude d’aînés vivant de manière indépendante dans la communauté ont été mis au point et testés dans le but d’évaluer les outils d’autogestion comme Nutri-eSCREEN et d’autres programmes d’éducation. Cette étude constitue une première étape dans la mise au point d’un questionnaire destiné à évaluer les connaissances en nutrition d’aînés indépendants et leur attitude dans ce domaine (NAK-50+).
Méthodes. Cette étude s’est déroulée en plusieurs étapes : (i) rédaction d’une ébauche des questions basée sur le contenu de la documentation du programme Nutri-eSCREEN, (ii) recours à des entrevues cognitives servant à déterminer si ces questions étaient compréhensibles et pertinentes (n = 9 adultes d’âge ≥50 ans), et (iii) vérification de la fiabilité de la méthode test–retest auprès d’un échantillon communautaire pratique (n = 60 adultes d’âge ≥50 ans). La fiabilité a été déterminée au moyen des coefficients de corrélation intraclasse (CCI) et de Kappa.
Résultats. Ce développement suivi d’une analyse a mené à la création d’un questionnaire en 33 points. Le CCI du score total était de 0,68, reflétant la bonne cohérence et donc la fiabilité initiale du questionnaire.
Conclusions. NAK-50+ est un questionnaire fiable et de validité apparente évaluant les connaissances en nutrition et l’attitude des adultes indépendants d’âge ≥50 ans. Davantage de travail devra être effectué afin de déterminer la validité de construit du questionnaire et de l’affiner. La disponibilité du questionnaire pour ce groupe d’âge sera d’une aide précieuse dans l’évaluation rigoureuse des interventions d’éducation et d’autogestion pour ce segment de la population.
