What Practice Issues Over 25 Years Most Interest Registered Dietitians? Survey and Interview Results

Abstract

Dietetics has changed substantially; a mixed-methods project was undertaken to: (i) gauge interest in the profession history since 1993, (ii) identify preferred format(s), (iii) identify possible topics, and (iv) identify possible key informants. An online bilingual survey was conducted in 2018, with follow-up phone interviews among interested respondents. Survey content was organised as 12 major topics. Respondents were invited via a Dietitians of Canada (DC) newsletter, Facebook groups, and at the DC national conference. Survey data, including respondent-generated topics of interest and interview content, were descriptively analyzed. The online survey garnered 360 responses; 332 (92%) completed more than 10% of the survey and were interested in history. Detailed responses were analyzed (296 English; 36 French); 51 were interviewed. An online timeline was the most preferred format (79%). Review of the rise in technology and obesity, aging, supermarket registered dietitians (RDs), the local/organic movement, Practice-based Evidence in Nutrition (PEN), the changes in training models and scope of practice, public awareness of the profession, and advocacy and unique career paths were of most interest (≥ 50% of respondents). These results confirm interest in the recent history of the profession among RDs and provide guidance on preferred format and topics for further work.

La diététique a beaucoup changé. À cet égard, un projet à méthodes mixtes a été entrepris pour : (i) mesurer l’intérêt envers l’histoire de la profession depuis 1993, (ii) cibler le ou les formats préférés, (iii) cibler les sujets possibles et (iv) cibler les répondants clés potentiels. Un sondage bilingue en ligne a été réalisé en 2018, avec des entrevues téléphoniques de suivi auprès de répondants intéressés. Le contenu du sondage était divisé en 12 sujets. Les répondants ont été invités par l’entremise d’un bulletin des Diététistes du Canada (DC), de groupes Facebook et lors du congrès national des DC. Les données du sondage, notamment les sujets d’intérêt soulevés par les répondants et le contenu des entrevues, ont fait l’objet d’une analyse descriptive. Le sondage en ligne a suscité 360 réponses; 332 (92 %) personnes ont répondu à plus de 10 % du sondage et s’intéressaient à l’histoire. Les réponses détaillées ont été analysées (296 en anglais; 36 en français); 51 personnes ont été interrogées. Une chronologie en ligne était le format le plus prisé (79 %). Une revue de l’essor de la technologie et de la hausse de l’obésité, du vieillissement et des diététistes en supermarché; le mouvement local/biologique; Pratique en nutrition reposant sur des données probantes (PEN); les changements aux modèles de formation et au champ de pratique; la sensibilisation du public à la profession; et les efforts de plaidoyer et les cheminements de carrière uniques ont suscité le plus d’intérêt (≥ 50 % des répondants). Ces résultats confirment l’intérêt des diététistes pour l’histoire récente de la profession et donnent des indications quant au format préféré et aux sujets à approfondir.
