Professional Socialization in Dietetics: A Review of the Literature

Abstract

The process of professionalization has been widely studied in nursing, but little is known about it in dietetics. We explored the process of professionalization using an integrative review of nursing literature. Three research questions were addressed: 1. What are the stages of professional socialization? 2. Who are the participants in the socialization process? 3. What challenges are associated with the socialization process? From an initial list of 322 articles compiled from a search of relevant databases, 49 English-language primary research papers were selected for review. A form of constant comparative analysis was conducted to extract relevant data into categories based on the research questions. Findings suggest that the process of professional socialization is a complex and stressful process, which occurs in three phases and begins before entry into the formal education system. Within the formal education system, faculty and preceptors can have a positive or negative impact on an individual's professional growth and development. Much work is needed to develop an understanding of this process in dietetics, but the findings will have immediate relevance to dietitians’ educational and practice contexts.

Résumé

Le processus de professionnalisation a été largement étudié en sciences infirmières, mais on en sait très peu sur ce processus dans le contexte de la diététique. Cet article explore le processus de professionnalisation par l'entremise d'une revue globale de la littérature en sciences infirmières. Trois questions de recherche ont été explorées : 1. Quelles sont les étapes de la socialisation professionnelle? 2. Qui sont les intervenants dans le processus de socialisation? 3. Quels sont les défis associés au processus de socialisation? D'une liste contenant initialement 322 articles compilés en effectuant des recherches dans les bases de données pertinentes, 49 articles de recherche fondamentale en langue anglaise ont été choisis pour la revue. Une forme d'analyse comparative en continu a été menée afin d'extraire les données pertinentes en catégories en fonction des questions de recherche. Les conclusions suggèrent que le processus de socialisation professionnelle est complexe et stressant, qu'il se produit en trois étapes et qu'il débute avant l'entrée dans le système formel d’éducation. Une fois les étudiants admis dans le système formel d’éducation, le personnel de la faculté et les précepteurs peuvent avoir un impact positif ou négatif sur leur croissance et leur développement professionnels. Beaucoup de travail est nécessaire pour comprendre ce processus en ce qui concerne la diététique, mais les conclusions seront immédiatement pertinentes dans le contexte de l’éducation et de la pratique de la diététique.
