Nutrient and Food Group Intakes of Manitoba Children and Youth: A Population-Based Analysis by Pulse and Soy Consumption Status

Abstract

Poor eating habits among children are associated with negative health outcomes. The objective of this study was to use pulse/soy consumption as an indicator to evaluate the eating profile of young Manitobans. Data from the Canadian Community Health Survey Cycle 2.2 were used for analysis and restricted to Manitoba residents aged 2 to 18 years (n = 1840). Consumers were identified as individuals who reported eating at least 1 pulse/soy product during their recall. On any given day, 8.2% of Manitobans reported consumption of pulses/soy. Intakes of fibre, protein, magnesium, and zinc were higher in consumers only when expressed relative to total caloric intake. Consumers also reported increased intakes of meat and alternatives. Total intakes of vitamin D, fibre, and fruit and vegetable consumption were low among all groups. Sodium intakes in both groups were high when compared with levels recommended by health professionals. These results indicate that there are many dietary issues affecting Manitoba children, suggesting the need for more research targeting dietary habits of children and youth, the quality of the food supply, and effective strategies in nutrition education.

Résumé

Les mauvaises habitudes alimentaires chez les enfants sont associées à des résultats négatifs en matière de santé. L'objectif de cette étude était d'utiliser la consommation de légumineuses et de soya comme indicateur pour évaluer le profil alimentaire des jeunes Manitobains. Les données du cycle 2.2 de l’Enquête sur la santé dans les collectivités canadiennes ont été utilisées pour l’analyse et ont été restreintes aux résidents du Manitoba âgés de 2 à 18 ans (n = 1840). Les consommateurs étaient les personnes ayant indiqué avoir mangé au moins une légumineuse ou un produit de soya lors du rappel. Au cours d’une journée donnée, 8,2 % des Manitobains ont indiqué consommer des légumineuses ou du soya. Les apports en fibre, en protéines, en magnésium et en zinc étaient plus élevés chez les consommateurs seulement lorsqu’ils étaient exprimés en fonction de l’apport calorique total. On a également noté une consommation accrue de viandes et substituts chez les consommateurs. Les apports totaux en vitamine D et en fibre et la consommation de fruits et légumes étaient faibles parmi tous les groupes. Les apports en sodium étaient élevés dans les deux groupes comparativement aux quantités recommandées par les professionnels de la santé. Ces résultats indiquent que les enfants manitobains sont touchés par plusieurs enjeux alimentaires, d’où le besoin de mener plus de recherche ciblant les habitudes alimentaires des enfants et des jeunes, la qualité de l’approvisionnement alimentaire et des stratégies efficaces en matière d’éducation à la nutrition.
