Opportunities for Qualitative Analysis of Social Media Platforms in Dietetic Research and Practice

Abstract

To date, most qualitative knowledge about individual eating patterns and the food environment has been derived from traditional data collection methods, such as interviews, focus groups, and observations. However, there currently exists a large source of nutrition-related data in social media discussions that have the potential to provide opportunities to improve dietetic research and practice. Qualitative social media discussion analysis offers a new tool for dietetic researchers and practitioners to gather insights into how the public discusses various nutrition-related topics. We first consider how social media discussion data come with significant advantages including low-cost access to timely ways to gather insights from the public, while also cautioning that social media data have limitations (e.g., difficulty verifying demographic information). We then outline 3 types of social media discussion platforms in particular: (i) online news article comment sections, (ii) food and nutrition blogs, and (iii) discussion forums. We discuss how each different type of social media offers unique insights and provide a specific example from our own research using each platform. We contend that social media discussions can contribute positively to dietetic research and practice.

Résumé

À ce jour, la plupart des connaissances qualitatives sur les habitudes alimentaires individuelles et l’environnement alimentaire sont issues de méthodes de collecte de données traditionnelles, comme les entrevues, les groupes de discussion et les observations. Cependant, il existe actuellement une vaste source de données liées à la nutrition dans les discussions sur les médias sociaux qui pourrait offrir des occasions d’améliorer la pratique et la recherche en diététique. L’analyse qualitative des discussions sur les médias sociaux offre un nouvel outil aux praticiens et aux chercheurs en diététique pour comprendre comment le public aborde les divers sujets liés à la nutrition. Nous explorons d’abord les avantages importants que présentent les données issues des discussions sur les médias sociaux, par exemple l’accès à faible coût à des moyens rapides de recueillir l’opinion du public, tout en reconnaissant que les données issues des médias sociaux ont leurs limites (p. ex. difficulté à vérifier les données démographiques). Nous présentons ensuite 3 types de plateformes de discussion sur les médias sociaux : (i) la section « commentaires » des articles d’actualité en ligne, (ii) les blogues sur les aliments et la nutrition, et (iii) les forums de discussion. Nous abordons comment chacun des types de médias sociaux offre un point de vue unique et donnons un exemple précis de notre propre recherche en utilisant chacune des plateformes. Nous croyons que les discussions sur les médias sociaux peuvent contribuer positivement à la pratique et à la recherche en diététique.
