Enhancing Response Ability: Dietetics as a Vehicle for Social Justice—A Primer

Abstract

Recent world events have shone a spotlight on the social and structural injustices that impact the lives, health, and well-being of individuals and communities under threat. Dietitians should be well positioned to play a role in redressing injustice through their individual and collective “response abilities”, that is, the combination of responsibility for and ability to be responsive to such injustices due to the varying privilege and power that dietitians have. However, recent research shows that dietitians report a lack of knowledge, skill, and confidence to take on such roles, and that dietetic education includes little knowledge- or skill-based learning that might prepare dietitians to do so. This primer aims to introduce readers to concepts that are fundamental to socially just dietetics practice, including privilege, structural competence, critical reflexivity, critical humility, and critical praxis. We assert that when implemented into practice and used to inform advocacy and activism these concepts enhance dietitians’ individual and collective response ability to redress injustice.

Résumé

Les événements récents à l’échelle planétaire ont braqué les projecteurs sur les injustices sociales et structurelles qui ont des effets sur la vie, la santé et le bien-être des personnes et des communautés menacées. Les diététistes devraient être bien positionnés pour jouer un rôle dans la réparation des injustices grâce à leurs « capacités de réaction » individuelles et collectives, lesquelles combinent une responsabilité et une capacité de réagir devant de telles injustices en misant sur les divers privilèges et pouvoirs que possèdent les diététistes. Toutefois, de récentes recherches montrent que les diététistes rapportent ne pas posséder suffisamment de connaissances, de compétences et de confiance pour assumer de tels rôles, et que la formation en diététique inclut peu d’apprentissages fondés sur les connaissances et les compétences qui seraient à même de préparer les diététistes à jouer ces rôles. Cette introduction vise à présenter aux lecteurs les concepts essentiels à une pratique de la diététique socialement équitable, notamment le privilège, la compétence structurelle, la réflexivité critique, l’humilité critique et la pratique critique. Nous soutenons que lorsqu’ils seront mis en œuvre dans la pratique et utilisés pour orienter la mobilisation et l’activisme, ces concepts amélioreront la capacité de réaction individuelle et collective des diététistes à réparer les injustices.
