Literature on dietary behaviours of the pediatric Crohn’s Disease (CD) population and the relationship between dietary intake and CD activity is limited. Three dietary indices were developed and tested to conduct dietary pattern analysis in pediatric patients with CD consuming a free diet following remission induction via exclusive enteral nutrition (n = 11). Index scores underwent descriptive and inferential analysis. The mean adjusted scores (out of 100) for the Pediatric Western Diet Index, Pediatric Prudent Diet Index, and Pediatric-Adapted 2010 Alternate Healthy Eating Index (PA2010-AHEI) were 29.82 ± 15.22, 34.25 ± 15.18, and 51.50 ± 11.69, respectively. The mean Western-to-Prudent ratio was 0.94 ± 0.55. A significant correlation (r = −0.71) and relationship (F[1, 9] = 9.04, P < 0.05, R2 = 0.501) between the Western-to-Prudent ratio and PA2010-AHEI was found. The results suggest participants were not following a Western or Prudent diet, and were consuming foods not captured by the indices. More research is needed to describe dietary intake of individuals with CD, validate dietary indices in diverse samples, and explore the utility of these indices in CD assessment and treatment. Purpose: Major changes were made to Canada’s Food Guide (CFG) in 2019. This study aimed to understand the perceptions of older adults toward this newest version.Methods: Older adults were invited to participate via newsletters sent to older adults and retirees’ organizations in the Province of Quebec. Participants completed an online survey about their baseline familiarity with the 2019 CFG using a 5-point Likert scale and took part in an individual semi-structured online interview, which explored their perceptions toward the 2019 CFG. A thematic qualitative analysis of the interview transcripts was performed.Results: Fifty-eight older adults (>65 years, 30 women, 28 men, including 19 consumers and 39 non-consumers of plant-based protein (PBP) foods) participated in the study. Older adults were mostly familiar with the 2019 CFG and had a positive perception of its features. They appreciated the design, proposed recipes, and healthy eating recommendations. Perceptions about the three food groups were mixed, mainly regarding the decreased emphasis on dairy products. Some appreciated that animal proteins were less prominent, while others raised issues on how to integrate PBP into their diet. Perceptions appeared to be influenced by sex and PBP consumption.Conclusion: Older adults in the Province of Quebec view most of the 2019 CFG recommendations positively. Purpose: To assess care home and staff characteristics associated with task-focused (TF) and relationship-centred care (RCC) mealtime practices prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: Staff working in Canadian and American care homes were invited to complete a 23-item online survey assessing their perceptions of mealtime care, with one item assessing 26 potential care practices from the Mealtime Relational Care Checklist (relationship-centred = 15; task-focused = 11) reported to occur in the home prior to the pandemic. Multivariate linear regression evaluated staff and care home characteristics associated with mealtime practices.Results: Six hundred and eighty-six respondents completed all questions used in this analysis. Mean TF and RCC mealtime practices were 4.89 ± 1.99 and 9.69 ± 2.96, respectively. Staff age was associated with TF and RCC practices with those 40–55 years reporting fewer TF and those 18–39 years reporting fewer RCC practices. Those providing direct care were more likely to report TF practices. Dissatisfaction with mealtimes was associated with more TF and fewer RCC practices. Homes that were not making changes to promote RCC pre-pandemic had more TF and fewer RCC practices. Newer care homes were associated with more RCC, while small homes (≤49 beds) had more TF practices.Conclusions: Mealtime practices are associated with staff and home factors. These factors should be considered in efforts to improve RCC practices in Canadian homes.- OPEN ACCESSLand2Lab is an evolving community-based intergenerational program that brings together Elders and youth on the land and in the kitchen and lab to share and celebrate Mi’kmaw foodways. Rooted in an Etuaptmumk-Two Eyed Seeing (E-TES) perspective, which acknowledges both Indigenous and Western ways of knowing, the project to date has featured seasonal food workshops, involvement in a children’s summer math camp, a food safety training workshop for teens, and the development of an online toolkit. The project was guided by the Mi’kmaw principle of Netukulimk, which reinforces respect for Mother Earth and stewardship of the land, water, and air for subsequent generations. Involvement of community leaders has been key to successful planning and implementation. While technology plays an important role, lessons learned on the land are critical and will inform efforts to include language and ceremony in future programming. Dietitians are encouraged to support Indigenous-led land-based learning in support of the profession’s commitment to reconciliation.
- Purpose: The Canadian federal government has expressed an intention to work with provinces and territories to develop a national school food program (SFP). This study aimed to explore caregivers’ perception of attributes important to include in a future SFP.Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted. Fifteen elementary schools from high, medium, or low median income neighbourhoods in Saskatoon were invited to participate. School principals sent a survey link to students’ caregivers. The 37-item survey included an item with 15 statements asking caregivers to rate the importance of various components of a SFP. Descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis were conducted.Results: A total of 510 caregivers completed the survey (response rate of 52%). The factor analysis indicated four key components of a future SFP: (1) learning opportunities on growing and preparing food, (2) offering healthy food following Canada’s Food Guide, (3) affordability of the meals offered, and (4) cultural adaptability of the meal program. Over 90% of caregivers thought providing healthy meals and ample time to eat meals to be very important.Conclusion: Our results indicate caregivers support multicomponent meal programs that, along with providing nutritious food, help children build healthy habits and sustainable food systems. These findings will help dietitians understand caregivers’ perspectives to inform the design of a national SFP.

Linking Immigrants with Nutrition Knowledge (Project LINK) was a service-learning cultural competence training programme completed by undergraduate dietetic students enrolled in the University of Saskatchewan’s (USASK) nutrition and dietetic programme.This paper evaluates the impact of participation in the programme on students’ cultural competence. We conducted a cross-sectional survey and qualitative analysis of reflective essays of 107 participants of Project LINK from 2011 to 2014. Cumulative logistic regression models assessed the impact of the intervention on students’ cultural competencies. The Akaike information criterion compared models and Spearman correlation coefficient identified possible correlation among pre- and post-intervention data points. Student reflective essays were analyzed by inductive thematic analysis.All cultural competencies improved comparing pre- and post-participation in Project LINK. Odds of increasing one level of student knowledge were 110 times of that prior to Project LINK. Comparing student competencies before and after Project LINK, the odds of increasing one level of students’ skills were six times greater, five times greater for increasing one level of students’ ability to interact or encounter, and 2.8 times greater for increasing one level of students’ attitude.The results of this study indicate Project LINK has successfully increased cultural competence and underscores the importance of combining opportunities for practical experience in addition to classroom-based training on cultural competence. - Within long-term care homes (LTCHs), conflicts occur between residents’ desires, LTCH constraints, and healthcare providers’ concerns about risks of harm. Due to the high prevalence of dysphagia and malnutrition in these settings, decisions regarding food choices are a common source of such tensions. Existing biomedical ethical models fail to capture the complexity of the interprofessional chronic care environment. This article proposes an alternative ethical lens, the relational ethics model. We describe a case illustrating the application of a decision-making framework with a relational ethics lens for a resident with severe dysphagia and malnutrition. We highlight how the bioethics model excludes important actors from ethical decision making. We encourage registered dietitians working in LTCH to incorporate a relational ethics model into their practice to help identify resident’s values and bring attention to the interconnectedness of caring relationships and contextual factors. This approach can inform difficult decisions regarding the food and nutrition choices of residents and may facilitate meaningful outcomes for both individuals and the long-term care community.
Indigenous Identity and Household Food Insecurity are Associated with Poor Health Outcomes in Canada

Purpose: To examine whether Indigenous identity and food insecurity combined were associated with self-reported poor health.Methods: Data from the 2015–2016 Canadian Community Health Survey and multiple logistic regression were employed to evaluate the association between Indigenous identity, household food insecurity, and health outcomes, adjusted for individual and household covariates. The Alexander Research Committee in Alexander First Nation (Treaty 6) reviewed the manuscript and commented on the interpretation of study findings.Results: Data were from 59082 adults (3756 Indigenous). The prevalence of household food insecurity was 26.3% for Indigenous adults and 9.8% for non-Indigenous adults (weighted to the Canadian population). Food-secure Indigenous adults, food-insecure non-Indigenous adults, and food-insecure Indigenous adults had significantly (p < 0.001) greater odds of poor health outcomes than food-secure non-Indigenous adults (referent group). Food-insecure Indigenous adults had 1.96 [95% CI:1.53,2.52], 3.73 [95% CI: 2.95,4.72], 3.00 [95% CI:2.37,3.79], and 3.94 [95% CI:3.02,5.14] greater odds of a chronic health condition, a chronic mental health disorder, poor general health, and poor mental health, respectively, compared to food-secure non-Indigenous adults.Conclusions: Health policy decisions and programs should focus on food security initiatives for all Canadians, including addressing the unique challenges of Indigenous communities, irrespective of their food security status.- OPEN ACCESS

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the reliability and validity of an online approach to monitoring food affordability in Ontario using the updated Ontario Nutritious Food Basket (ONFB).Methods: The ONFB was priced online in 12 large multi-chain grocery stores to test intra-/inter-rater reliability using percent agreement and intra-class correlations (ICCs). Then, the ONFB was priced in-store and online in 28 stores to estimate food price differences using paired t-tests and Pearson’s correlation for all (n =1708) and matched items (same product/brand and purchase unit) (n = 1134).Results: Intra-/inter-rater agreement was high (95.4%/81.6%; ICC = 0.972, F = 69.9, p < 0.001). On average, in-store prices were less than $0.02 lower than online prices. There were no significant differences between mean in-store and online prices for all items (t = 0.504 p = 0.614). The mean price was almost perfectly correlated between in-store and online (fully matched: R = 0.993 p < 0.001; all items: R = 0.967 p < 0.001). Online monthly ONFB estimates for a family of four were strongly correlated (R = 0.937 p < 0.001) with estimates calculated using in-store data.Conclusions: Online pricing is a reliable and valid approach to food costing in Ontario that contributes to modernizing the monitoring of food affordability in Canada and abroad. - OPEN ACCESS

Purpose: The Food and Nutrition for Manitoba Youth (FANS) study examined dietary intakes, food behaviours, food security status, health indicators, and body mass index of a cohort of grade 9 students. This paper describes regional differences and similarities in dietary intake (food and nutrients) and quality of youth participants in the FANS study.Methods: Grade 9 students completed a web-based survey on dietary intakes (24-hour recall), food behaviours, self-reported health indicators, and sociodemographic variables. Nutrient intakes were compared with national guidelines and diet quality was assessed using a modified Healthy Eating Index.Results: A total of 1587 students participated from northern, rural, and urban regions in Manitoba. Northern and rural students had higher intakes of sugar, sodium, and saturated fat compared with urban. Northern students consumed fewer grain products compared to urban, and more servings of “other” foods compared with rural and urban. While most participants were classified into the “needs improvement” or “poor” Healthy Eating Index categories, significantly more northern participants were in the “poor” category.Conclusions: Most adolescents in the study are at nutritional risk; however, there are additional vulnerabilities for those in rural and northern communities. Dietitians can use results to advocate for and plan interventions to improve adolescent nutrition. - OPEN ACCESS

Purpose: To explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Nova Scotian dietitian’s roles, responsibilities, and professional development needs.Methods: We conducted a province-wide, online, exploratory survey with registered dietitians during the initial waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Differences were explored with descriptive statistics by work sector (hospital/acute care; primary health/community or public health (PH); long-term care [LTC]; other [e.g., private practice, retail]).Results: Dietitians (n = 122) reported being most frequently challenged by stress and anxiety, changing work expectations, and rapidly evolving safety protocols during the pandemic. Those working in PH, primary health, and LTC reported experiencing more work responsibilities, more change, and perceived less employer support than dietitians in other sectors. Despite the identified challenges, most participants (70.7%) felt their education and training were sufficient to take on these new work roles. Primary and PH dietitians, however, more frequently perceived their skill sets to be under-utilized than other sectors. Key learnings from practice identified as being important for dietetic education included qualities such as resilience, problem-solving, flexibility, and self-care.Conclusion: These findings will be of interest to health administrators, professional bodies, and academic institutions to inform strategies for strengthening dietetic practice, building resilience, and preparing for future emergencies. - Mahsa Jessri PhD,

This study aimed to develop and validate a diet assessment screener – the Dietary Pattern Calculator (DiPaC). A scoping review identified currently available short diet quality assessment tools. Twenty-one articles covering 19 unique tools were included. The current tools mainly focused on individual nutrients or food groups or were developed for a specific population, and few ascertained overall dietary patterns. The 24-hour dietary recalls from the nationally representative Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS)-Nutrition 2015 (n = 13,958) were used to derive and validate a personalized dietary pattern informed by the scoping review using weighted partial least squares. The dominant dietary pattern in CCHS-Nutrition 2015 was characterized by high consumption of fast foods, carbonated drinks, and salty snacks and low consumption of whole fruits, orange vegetables, other vegetables and juices, whole grains, dark green vegetables, legumes, and soy. The dietary pattern assessment was used to create and evaluate DiPaC following an agile and user-centred research and development approach. DiPaC, which demonstrated high validity and intermediate reliability (internal consistency = 0.47–0.51), is publicly available at https://www.projectbiglife.ca/. DiPaC can be used by the public, clinicians, and researchers for quick and robust assessment of diet quality, providing immediate feedback with the advantage of being easy to implement.- OPEN ACCESS

Many Canadian universities have committed to becoming more accountable to Indigenous Peoples by confronting the systemic, historical, and ongoing colonialism and anti-Indigenous racism that shape their campuses. In this Perspective in Practice piece, we invite the field of dietetics to consider how colonialism has shaped dietetics research, teaching, and practice. We also consider how we might transform the field of dietetics in ways that accept settler responsibility for interrupting racism and colonial harm; support the resurgence of Indigenous food and health practices; and recognise the connections between struggles to ensure that Indigenous Peoples can access culturally appropriate food and health care, and struggles for Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. We do this by reviewing the history of the dietetics field, examining critical responses to existing Indigenisation and decolonisation efforts, and reflecting on recent changes to required dietetics competencies. We argue that curricula in dietetics programmes must teach the history of the colonial food system and equip students to identify and interrupt the individual and institutional colonial dynamics that contribute to the ongoing dispossession of Indigenous Peoples’ lands and food sources and negatively impact Indigenous patients. - Katherine F Eckert MSc, PDt,

International health organizations have called for a shift towards more plant-based foods as a way of promoting both individual health and environmental sustainability. Given the high percentage of children in Canada who attend childcare and the high volume of food provided in childcare, transitioning menus to incorporate plant-based foods could have important implications for both planetary and child health. The purpose of this case study is to describe a childcare centre’s transition to a plant-based menu. A detailed nutritional analysis of the menu was conducted. The financial and logistical implications of the transitions to a plant-based menu were also assessed. Nutritional analysis revealed that the plant-based menu met or exceeded the daily nutrient requirement for all the key nutrients explored. Financially, the transition led to a 9% reduction in food costs. Logistically, the transition led to improved efficiency and safety with regard to food preparation, with substantially fewer tailored meals due to allergies and dietary restrictions required after the transition. These novel findings are relevant for food service administrators interested in transitioning to a plant-based menu as well as public health dietitians who could support the transition.- Heather J. Purpose: We conducted a pilot survey among young adults attending a suburban Canadian university to understand: (1) knowledge of the 2019 Canada’s Food Guide (CFG); (2) self-reported food choices and eating habits; (3) perceived influence of the CFG on food choices and eating habits; and (4) suggestions to improve engagement with CFG.Methods: Students were recruited, through posts on social media platforms, to complete an online questionnaire between 7 March and 6 April 2020.Results: One-hundred and twenty-one (70% women) students responded. One-third (33%) of women and 8% of men reported consuming the recommended proportion of vegetables and fruits (i.e., 40%–60% of the plate) at their most recent meal (P = 0.001). Men were more likely to report overconsuming protein foods than women (58% vs 32%, P = 0.005). The perceived influence of the CFG on food choices and eating habits was low, with a mean score 2.2 ± 1.4 out of 7, with 7 indicating “highly influential.” Over 92% of participants believed awareness of the CFG could be improved through social media platforms.Conclusions: Although half of the participants correctly answered all 8 questions that assessed knowledge of the CFG, there is an opportunity for dietitians and related health professionals to improve engagement with CFG.- OPEN ACCESS

Purpose: Fish and seafood consumption by North American children is low. This is concerning, given the critical role of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid), found in fish and seafood, in early development. This study aimed to determine whether parental factors related to fish and seafood consumption are associated with frequency of fish and seafood consumption in Canadian children.Methods: A subgroup of parents (n = 28) participating in the Guelph Family Health Study Pilot reported their perceptions and history of fish and seafood consumption, confidence in preparing fish and seafood dishes, and the frequency of intake for their children (n = 40).Results: This study found that 20% of children consumed one serving of saltwater fish, freshwater fish, or shellfish weekly and 63% consumed at least one type of fish or seafood monthly. Parental cooking confidence preparing fish and seafood was positively associated with at least monthly fish and seafood intake in children.Conclusions: These findings suggest that some children may have low intakes of fish and seafood due to a lack of parental cooking confidence when preparing fish and seafood dishes. Purpose: To assess knowledge of Canadian dietitians on the topics of food allergy and food allergy prevention guidelines, including introduction of allergenic solids to infants at risk of food allergy.Methods: An online survey was distributed via email listservs targeting Canadian dietitians.Results: In total, 144 of 261 dietitians completed the survey (60.5%). Respondents recommend introduction of peanut (89.5%) and allergenic solids (91.2%) within the recommended age of 4–6 months for infants at high risk of food allergy, but only 26.2% recommend offering peanut three times per week once it has been introduced. In identifying what constitutes an infant at high risk of developing peanut allergy, dietitians expressed lower comfort levels and lower number of correct responses.Conclusions: Dietitians demonstrated they are up to date regarding the timing of introduction of allergenic solids, but not the frequency of consumption once introduced, for infants at high risk of food allergy. They also expressed low comfort level identifying risk factors for peanut allergy. There are opportunities for further education of dietitians, as well as potential to further utilize dietitian services for the benefit of patients with food allergy or who are at risk for food allergy.- Alexandra Pepetone BSc,

Purpose: Co-operative (co-op) education facilitates development of workplace competencies but may have unintended consequences for financial stability and food security. This study examined the association between co-op program enrolment and food security status among a sample of undergraduate students. Financial insufficiency and strategies to cope with it were also characterized.Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected from 167 co-op and 89 non-co-op students at the University of Waterloo from January to March 2019. Logistic regression assessed associations between co-op program enrolment and food insecurity.Results: Twenty-four percent of co-op and 39.3% of non-co-op students lived in moderately or severely food insecure households. Adjusting for confounders, the odds of living in moderately or severely food insecure households were lower among co-op students (adjusted odds ratio: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.27–0.97), though no association was observed when marginal food insecurity was included within the food insecure category. One-quarter (26.3%) of co-op students and 38.2% of non-co-op students reported financial insufficiency, which they tried to cope with by asking parents or friends for assistance or initiating paid work.Conclusions: Co-op program enrolment was weakly associated with lower odds of living in moderately or severely food insecure households, and food insecurity prevalence was high overall. Efforts are needed to alleviate food insecurity among postsecondary students.- Purpose: To examine the level of agreement between a patient-completed food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and assessment of usual intake by a registered dietitian (RD) to score adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedD) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).Methods: Patients with IBD completed a short FFQ and were subsequently interviewed by an RD. A 12-item MedD score (MDS), adapted from the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS), was calculated from the FFQ and RD assessments. To determine agreement between individual items, Cohen’s kappa coefficients were calculated. Absolute agreement between assessment methods was quantified using a one-way random intra-class correlation coefficient for a single measure.Results: Forty-six patients with IBD participated. The mean FFQ-MDS was 4.59 (standard deviation [SD] = 1.65), and mean RD-MDS was 4.83 (SD = 1.53). Kappa coefficients for individual MEDAS items ranged from 0.41 to 0.78 (p < 0.01) between the FFQ- and RD-MDS. Most items demonstrated moderate to substantial agreement. The intra-class correlation coefficient for absolute agreement between the summed FFQ-MDS and RD-MDS was 0.71 (95% confidence interval: 0.52–0.83, p < 0.001), indicating moderate reliability.Conclusions: This patient-completed FFQ may be a promising tool in clinical practice and research and would benefit from additional evaluation to validate its use in patients with IBD.
- OPEN ACCESSMaternal diet during pregnancy can have a significant impact on maternal and offspring health. As nutrition counselling is an important component of prenatal care, registered dietitians (RDs) are uniquely trained professionals who can provide personalized nutrition counselling customized to an individual’s sociocultural needs. The objective of this systematic review was to determine if RD involvement during pregnancy is associated with a lower prevalence of adverse birth outcomes in the United States and Canada. The review was conducted through a search of four databases: PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science. A total of 14 studies were identified. Women had a lower prevalence of low birth weight and preterm infants when RDs were involved during prenatal care. While RD involvement during pregnancy was not associated with macrosomia, more research is needed to assess its relationship with small for gestational age, large for gestational age, and infant mortality. Future research should also investigate the specific dietary advice provided by RDs and the extent and timing of their involvement throughout pregnancy to better understand the mechanisms surrounding nutrition counselling, in utero development, and health outcomes.
- Purpose: School lunches are of poor nutritional quality in Canada. Parents play an important role in the preparation of school lunches for young children. This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability and helpfulness of the Healthy Lunch Box Booklet (HLBB) to support parents in packing healthy school lunches for their children.Methods: The HLBB was distributed at four schools in London, Ontario to students in full-day Kindergarten to Grade three. Parents were asked to complete an online survey from April to November 2019.Results: Parents (n = 58) reported the HLBB to be helpful (96.3%) and found the sections on new school lunch and snack ideas and nutritional information (e.g., label reading) particularly useful. Some parents also stated that the HLBB created opportunities to interact with their children regarding school lunch preparation. In terms of perceived impacts, parents reported increased confidence (68.6%) and learning something new (79.6%) about school lunch preparation and felt that their children’s diet was impacted accordingly.Conclusions: The HLBB was found to be an acceptable and useful nutrition resource that supports parents in packing healthy school lunches for their children and therefore warrants further study.

Olo nutritional follow-up care offers vulnerable pregnant women food vouchers, multivitamin supplements, tools, and nutritional counselling to support healthy pregnancy outcomes.Purpose: To evaluate the contribution of Olo follow-up care to nutritional intakes and eating practices, as well as to assess the programme-related experience of participants.Methods: Participants (n = 30) responded to questionnaires and web-based 24-hour dietary recalls and participated in a semi-structured interview (n = 10).Results: Olo follow-up care reduced the proportion of participants below the recommended intake for groups for many micronutrients, with the greatest reduction for folate (by 96.7%), vitamin D (by 93.3%), iron (by 70.0%), calcium (by 50.0%), and zinc (by 30.0%), mainly due to the prenatal multivitamin supplements. Most participants (96.7%) did not follow Olo’s typical recommendations but, if they had, hypothetically they would have consumed an average of 746 additional calories per day and be above the recommendations for excessive intakes of folic acid and iron (100% and 33.3%, respectively). More than half of the participants were moderately to severely food insecure. Olo contributed to reducing the impact of isolation and increased food accessibility and budget flexibility among participants.Conclusion: Olo follow-up care helped reduce the proportion of women below the recommended intake for micronutrients, but revising the food offered and strategies to address food insecurity may be necessary.- M. Purpose: Self-reported coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic effects on dietetic job search, employment, and practice of recent graduates were explored within a national workforce survey.Methods: Graduates (2015–2020) who were registered/licensed dietitians or eligible to write the Canadian Dietetic Registration Exam were recruited through dietetic programmes, Dietitians of Canada’s communication channels, and social media. The online survey, available in English and French from August through October 2020, included questions about pandemic experiences. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were applied to closed and open-ended responses, respectively.Results: Thirty-four percent of survey respondents (n = 524) indicated pandemic effects on job search and described delayed entry into dietetics, fewer job opportunities, and challenges including restricted work between sites. The pandemic affected employment for 44% of respondents; of these, 45% indicated working from home, 45% provided virtual counselling, 7% were redeployed within dietetics, 14% provided nondietetic COVID-19 support, and 6% were furloughed or laid off. Changed work hours, predominantly reduced, were identified by 29%. Changes in pay, identified by 12%, included loss (e.g., raises deferred) or gain (e.g., pandemic pay). Fear of infection and stress about careers and finances were expressed.Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly affected both acquiring positions and employment in 2020 for recent dietetic graduates.- Purpose: To investigate the experiences of dietetic students in a faculty-supervised, noncourse-based service-learning (NSL) opportunity called Nutrition Ignition! (NI!) to understand how NSL activities contribute to dietetic education.Methods: This study used focus group methodology. A convenience sample was recruited from current members of NI!. Participants completed a brief demographic questionnaire and then engaged in a focus group discussion led by a trained moderator who followed a semi-structured guide. Six focus group discussions were transcribed, and a common theme template was developed by researchers.Results: Out of 46 eligible members of NI!, 33 agreed to participate. The main reasons participants joined NI! were to develop professional skills and to help children in the community. Participants discussed many outcomes from their participation in NI!, including enhanced communication skills, especially in terms of knowledge translation; increased ability to be flexible and adapt to “real-world” situations; deeper awareness of the research process; and expanded world view.Conclusion: This study suggests that NSL is an effective way to build dietetic students’ personal and professional skills and provide an additional opportunity in academic settings to prepare dietetic students for entry-level practice.
- It is important that breast cancer patients know where they can access evidence-based nutrition information because misinformation may lead to confusion for patients regarding dietary requirements, as well as potentially causing harm to health. There are gaps in knowledge about where and when patients seek nutrition information. Our exploratory study used telephone interviews to investigate where patients with breast cancer obtained nutrition information pre and postdiagnosis, and their preferred sources and timing for receiving nutrition information. We interviewed 29 women diagnosed with breast cancer who had attended the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, Alberta. The structured interview included 13 closed-ended questions and 1 open-ended question. Interviews revealed that motives for seeking nutrition information changed between pre and postdiagnosis, but the sources did not. The majority of participants did not access a registered dietitian (RD) postdiagnosis but did specify that meeting with a RD would be their preferred source of information. Responses varied for the preferred sources and timing of nutrition information provision. Our study suggests that further research is necessary to know how to best meet the nutrition information needs of patients diagnosed with breast cancer.
- Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a chronic condition requiring continued input from the CF dietitian as an integral part of the CF multidisciplinary team. In recent years, the longer life expectancy experienced by people with CF (PwCF) means that nutrition advice and therapy are evolving from a focus on nutrition support to prevention and management of comorbidities. Little has been reported regarding the perceived role of the CF dietitian amongst PwCF. We report the responses to 11 questions that were part of a larger international survey distributed to members of national CF charities in 2018-2019. These questions evaluated PwCFs’ perspectives on (i) the importance of the CF diet, (ii) how often PwCF obtain dietary/nutritional advice from their dietitian, (iii) the perceived reliability of information given by the dietitian, (iv) other sources of CF information and their perceived reliability, and (v) how CF nutrition/diet, as well as CF-related diabetes, ranked as research priorities. There were 295 respondents from 13 countries. Almost half of the respondents (46.8%) contacted their CF dietitian on a frequent/more regular basis, compared to medical/scientific journals/medical/scientific search engines. The CF dietitian was considered a reliable source of information, as 84% of the respondents indicated that the information provided was very/generally reliable. At a time when CF care and expectations are changing rapidly, PwCF are in need of trusted and reliable information to make positive changes in lifestyle and habits. Dietitians working with PwCF should appreciate the pivotal and valued role they perform as purveyors of robust evidence-based information to this chronic disease population.

The Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) programme is an accredited obesity prevention programme in the United States, teaching children about nutrition, physical activity, and screen time limits. This study aimed to evaluate the perceptions of undergraduate and graduate student leaders’ about their experience delivering the CATCH programme in elementary schools in Northern Illinois school districts during the 2019–2020 school year and its impact on their personal and professional skills and on programme participants. An email questionnaire was sent to eligible students. Grounded theory was used to analyze the students’ responses. Two researchers assigned codes to the data and identified themes. Twenty-one students responded (50% response rate). Six identified themes include “purpose of CATCH programme,” “school facilities and resources,” “university students experience with CATCH lessons and activities,” “benefits to university student,” “benefits to children and teachers,” and “identified weaknesses and suggested improvements to CATCH.” University students delivering the CATCH programme appreciated the opportunity to practice in a real-world setting, gained transferable professional skills, increased programme content knowledge, identified CATCH programme benefits/strengths, and planned to apply lessons learned to future practice.- Lydi-Anne Vézina-Im Ph.D,

Objectif : Vérifier la stabilité temporelle et validité relative de la version française adaptée d’un questionnaire auto-déclaré en anglais mesurant la consommation de diverses boissons (BEVQ) chez les adolescents.Méthodes : L’adaptation française du BEVQ (AF-BEVQ) comprenait notamment la conversion des unités impériales en unités métriques et l’ajustement de certains formats selon ceux disponibles au Canada. Ensuite, 60 adolescents provenant de deux régions du Québec ont complété l’AF-BEVQ et deux rappels de 24 heures Web (R24W) (un jour de semaine et un de fin de semaine) à deux reprises à deux semaines d’intervalle.Résultats : L’AF-BEVQ avait des coefficients intra-classe (ICC) modérés pour les quantités de boissons sucrées (ICC : 0,68; intervalle de confiance [IC] 95 % : 0,46–0,81), de jus de fruits (ICC : 0,54; IC 95 % : 0,23–0,72) et d’eau (ICC : 0,66; IC 95 % : 0,38–0,81) consommées. Les quantités de boissons sucrées (rs = 0,49; p < 0,0001), de jus de fruits (rs = 0,38; p = 0,0024) et d’eau (rs = 0,65; p < 0,0001) rapportées dans l’AF-BEVQ étaient significativement corrélées à celles des deux R24W.Conclusions : L’AF-BEVQ présentait majoritairement des propriétés métrologiques adéquates. Il est un outil d’intérêt pour mesurer rapidement la consommation de boissons sucrées, de jus de fruits et d’eau d’adolescents francophones.- It is not known if nutrition risk screening of older adults should be a standard practice in primary care. The evidence in support of nutrition risk screening of older adults in primary care was examined and critically analyzed using an umbrella review. The peer reviewed and grey literature were searched for clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) and systematic reviews (SRs). Titles and abstracts were independently screened by the two authors. Resources were excluded if they did not apply to older adults, did not discuss nutrition/malnutrition risk screening, or were in settings other than primary care. Full texts were independently screened by both authors, resulting in the identification of six CPGs and three SRs that met the review criteria. Guidelines were appraised with the AGREE II tool and SRs with the AMSTAR 2 tool. The quality of the CPGs was high, while the quality of the SRs was low. The CPGs and SRs acknowledged a lack of high-quality research on the benefits of regular nutrition risk screening for older adults in primary care; however, CPGs recommended annual screening for older adults in primary care practices or other community settings. High-quality research investigating nutrition risk screening of older adults in primary care is needed.

Older adults are the fastest-growing demographic group in Canada, and the majority of older adults want to age-in-place within their communities. Many older adults live in naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs), unplanned communities with a high proportion of older residents. NORC supportive services programs can help older adults successfully age-in-place. One such program is Oasis Senior Supportive Living, a partnership between older adults, building owners and managers, community partners, funders, and researchers. Using a qualitative approach, interviews were conducted with Oasis participants to understand their experiences of Oasis. This article will describe the three pillars upon which Oasis programming is based and provide insights from Oasis participants. Purpose: This study aimed to explore children’s lived experiences with the Ontario Student Nutrition Program (OSNP), a free, school-based snack program implemented in elementary schools in Southwestern, Ontario, Canada, to gain insights into future school food programs (SFP).Methods: Focus group discussions (n=17) were conducted with 105 children in Grades 5 to 8 in seven elementary schools. Focus groups were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded for themes using inductive content analysis.Results: Overall, children appreciated the OSNP and felt that it filled a need in students. Children also reported a willingness to try novel food items. For future SFPs, participants recommended that input be sought from children to ensure food preferences were considered. Children also discussed wanting more appealing food offerings that may include some choice. Finally, children also mentioned wanting a fair and equitable distribution of food in classrooms.Conclusions: Children appreciated the OSNP and reported benefits to themselves and their peers. They also provided some valuable recommendations for future SFPs. If a nationally funded SFP is to be considered in Canada, children expressed the need to make the program equitable, while still allowing schools the flexibility to meet their unique needs and preferences.- Sunita Ghosh Ph.D. P.Stat.,

Purpose: This study compared anthropometric and body fat percent (BF%) equations in relation to measures of metabolic health.Methods: BF% calculations (Bergman, Fels, and Woolcott) and anthropometric measurements were used to determine obesity among a sample of patients attending primary care in Alberta, Canada. Anthropometric variables included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist:hip ratio, waist:height ratio, and calculated BF%. Metabolic Z-score was computed as the average of the individual Z-scores of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and fasting glucose and the number of standard deviations from the sample mean.Results: Five hundred and fourteen individuals were included (41.2% male, age: 53 ± 16y, BMI: 27.4 ± 5.7 kg/m2). BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 detected the smallest number of participants (n = 137) as having obesity, while Woolcott BF% equation categorized the largest number of participants as having obesity (n = 369). No anthropometric or BF% calculation predicted metabolic Z-score in males (all p ≥ 0.05). In females, age-adjusted waist:height ratio had the highest prediction power (R2 = 0.204, p < 0.001), followed by age-adjusted waist circumference (R2 = 0.200, p < 0.001) and age-adjusted BMI (R2 = 0.178, p < 0.001).Conclusions: This study did not find evidence that BF% equations more strongly predicted metabolic Z-scores than other anthropometric values. In fact, all anthropometric and BF% variables were weakly related to metabolic health parameters, with apparent sex differences.- Purpose: To describe the breastfeeding experiences of a dietitian and mother so as to expose dominant discourses reinforcing expert-driven imperatives to breastfeed.Methods: Professional experiences and personal challenges related to breastfeeding promotion are described, analyzed, and interpreted using autoethnography. The social ecological model (SEM) is used as a sensitizing concept to guide the organization, presentation, and analysis of experiences.Results: Data were organized into two discussion themes: breastfeeding promotion practices and “failure” to breastfeed. Dominant discourses reinforcing expert-driven imperatives to breastfeed are revealed, including health as a duty, intensive motherhood, and mother blame. Discourses promoting or reinforcing breastfeeding simultaneously judge and denormalize formula-feeding.Conclusions: Contemporary breastfeeding promotion messages and strategies are quiet coercions used to influence infant-feeding decisions and do not support the principles of evidence-based practice, person-centred care, and informed choice.

Purpose: FoodNOW (Food to eNhance Our Wellness) engaged in assessment of simulated households that include a person living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Nova Scotia to determine if a basic nutritious diet is affordable.Methods: We used supermarket websites to cost food and beverage items listed in the National Nutritious Food Basket (NNFB) for simulated households, each with a PLWHA. Food costing methodologies were co-developed and adapted with community members in response to barriers presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.Results: We found that simulated households, each with one PLWHA, that had a potential deficit after monthly expenses were a household of four on Income Assistance (−$1,058.70), a lone mother with two children on Income Assistance (−$973.65), a lone man on Income Assistance (−$677.40), and a household of four with one minimum-wage earner (−$383.45).Conclusions: Nova Scotia households with a PLWHA living on Income Assistance or with a minimum-wage earner cannot reasonably afford a nutritious diet in addition to basic household expenses. Using these food costing data can allow dietitians to efficiently inform government action and policy change to improve the health and wellness of individuals and families. - Purpose: This study investigated the potential influence of the 2019 Canada’s Food Guide (CFG) on the eating environment and food provided in early learning and childcare centres across Canada.Methods: Directors of childcare centres were invited to complete an online survey about their awareness and adoption of the 2019 CFG and submit their menus for analysis.Results: Twenty-five directors completed the survey, and eighteen cycle menus were analyzed. Frequency and the types of foods offered in childcare centres were assessed. Ninety-two percent reported being aware of the changes in the food guide. Many challenges including the lack of support and resources, cost of food, and food reluctance could affect their ability to apply the changes, especially the incorporation of plant-based protein and the uncertainty around the amount of dairy products to provide. Menu analysis indicated frequency of offering items from the various food groups. Vegetables were mostly offered during lunchtime with an average offering rate of 4.83 ± 0.24 times per week.Conclusion: Representatives of early learning and childcare centres identified having difficulties in interpreting and applying the changes in the 2019 CFG. Dietitians have the knowledge and skills required to support childcare centres through training opportunities, workshops, toolkits, and advocacy.

Gaps in communication training have been identified in Canadian and international academic and practicum dietetics programs. A workshop was developed to pilot supplementary media training to nutrition students/trainees studying in Nova Scotia. Students, interns, and faculty from two universities participated in the workshop. Data on perceived learning, media knowledge/skill use, and workshop feedback were collected immediately post-workshop using a mixed-form questionnaire. A modified questionnaire was administered eight months post-workshop to obtain information on utility of the perceived acquired knowledge/skills. Closed-ended responses underwent descriptive analysis, while open-ended responses underwent thematic analysis. Twenty-eight participants completed the questionnaire post-workshop, and six completed it at follow-up. All participants rated the workshop positively (7-point Likert scale) and reported learning something new (perceived). Perceived learning emphasized general media knowledge/skills and communication skills. Follow-up data suggested participants had applied perceived media knowledge/skills in message development and media and job interviews. These data suggest that nutrition students/trainees may benefit from supplementary communications and media training and provide a stimulus for ongoing curriculum review and discussion. - Purpose: Describe food/beverage intake among all patients and those with low meal intake and determine if the Hospital Food Experience Questionnaire (HFEQ), or its shorter version (HFEQ-sv), predicts food intake while considering patient (e.g., gender) and hospital characteristics (e.g., foodservice model).Methods: Cross-sectional study of 1087 adult patients from 16 hospitals in Ontario, Canada. The valid and reliable HFEQ assessed patients’ meal quality perceptions. Visual estimation determined overall meal and food/beverage intake using the Comstock method. Binary logistic regressions tested the association between patient and hospital characteristics and whether HFEQ or HFEQ-sv scores added utility in predicting overall meal intake (≤50% vs. ≥75%).Results: Approximately 29% of patients consumed ≤50% of their meal. Models assessing patient and hospital characteristics and either the HFEQ or the HFEQ-sv were significant (LRT(43) = 72.25, P = 0.003; LRT(43) = 93.46, P < 0.001). Men and higher HFEQ or HFEQ-sv scores demonstrated significantly higher odds of ≥75% meal consumption. Considering HFEQ or HFEQ-sv scores explained greater variance in meal intake and resulted in better model fits.Conclusions: The HFEQ and HFEQ-sv predict patient meal intake when adjusting for covariates and add utility in understanding meal intake. Either version can be confidently used to support menu planning and food delivery to promote food intake.
- The objective of this evaluation was to determine Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) undergraduate medical education (UME) students’ perceptions of the curriculum related to their nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and counseling self-efficacy/confidence. A 16-item electronic survey (Qualtrics©) was developed, and it included nutrition competency statements, adult and pediatric nutrition assessment and counseling confidence, and nutrition curriculum satisfaction. Students in Years 2, 3, and 4 (n = 192, 66%–73% female) were invited to answer the survey. Of the 61 respondents, 50.8% were Year 2, 34.9% Year 3, and 10.6% Year 4. Overall, 72.1% of the respondents were dissatisfied. Respondents perceived they were least competent in strategies to prevent and treat disease (72.1%), in applying basic dietary strategies (65.6%), and in ethics and nutrition management (62.3%), whereas 52.5% felt competent in the team approach to nutrition care. Respondents reported lowest confidence (less than 10%–15%) in specialized nutrition support, cancer care, renal nutrition, and mental health/eating disorders for both populations. NOSM medical learners reported curriculum dissatisfaction, nutrition incompetence, and poor levels of perceived confidence in nutrition management. Results will be used to inform nutrition curriculum enhancements and future outcome evaluations. Current and future physicians with enhanced nutrition knowledge, awareness of the Registered Dietitian (RD) roles, and an understanding of when to refer patients to an RD can provide better patient-centred care.
- Continuing care (CC) facilities have been impacted by a growing demand for services, insufficient resources for the provision of quality food and nutrition care, and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explored the roles and responsibilities of dietitians working in CC facilities in Nova Scotia (NS) before and after the COVID-19 first wave. Using ethics-approved questionnaires, the estimated 75 dietitians working in CC facilities in NS were surveyed in Fall 2019 and Fall 2020 about their roles and responsibilities. Twenty responded to the first questionnaire and 15 to the second. Analysis of data included simple statistical and qualitative description methods. The findings highlighted the complexities and challenges faced by these dietitians in the provision of resident nutrition care, overseeing foodservices, training staff and dietetic interns, and contributing to facility specific care committees before and after the COVID-19 first wave. There is a need to advocate for minimum standards for dietetic and foodservice funding in CC facilities based on higher acuity and complex care needs of residents and considering the multifaceted roles of dietitians in CC. Efforts to improve awareness about the roles of dietitians working in CC among resident families, other dietitians, and dietetic interns are also needed.
- Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have become a major contributor to the diets of Canadians, with a recent report from Statistics Canada suggesting Canadians are consuming almost one-half of their calories from UPFs. Research has linked UPF consumption with increased risk for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, among others. This paper sought to investigate the popularity of UPFs, particularly among children and teens, utilizing the socioecological model as a framework to illustrate how influences at multiple levels (i.e., public policy, organizational, community, interpersonal, and individual) have played a role in the proliferation of UPFs. Evidence from previous studies is used to identify how factors at different levels may influence UPF consumption and discuss potential strategies for reducing UPF consumption. To meaningfully reduce UPF consumption among Canadians, all levels should be considered, with the goal of creating a healthier Canadian population.

Weight bias and discrimination are highly pervasive and harmful to Canadians with higher weights. Researchers and practitioners who deliver, evaluate, and advise on dietary and weight-related interventions may inadvertently perpetuate weight bias through their work; however, trainees in these fields rarely have access to weight bias education within their applied health programs. This study evaluated the acceptability of an online educational weight bias module developed for undergraduate students enrolled in health courses. The intervention included a pre-recorded 20-minute online module with prompts for reflection or discussion, a self-assessment quiz, as well as a separate module and range of resources for instructors. Overall, 211 students from applied health courses and 4 instructors completed an online survey querying the module’s delivery, impact, and relevance. Students agreed that the module provided useful information (82%), was easy to understand (97%), and was the right length (75%), but reported wanting more interactivity and engagement with the content. Instructors found the module engaging and useful and expressed interest in additional resources and support for weight bias education. Future research should explore the impact of weight bias education on students’ weight-related attitudes and perceptions as well as feasibility and relevance of online features such as multimedia tools.- Purpose: When admitted to the hospital, individuals with celiac disease rely on food handlers for provision of safe, uncontaminated gluten-free meals. We aimed to assess the knowledge of gluten-free diet (GFD) amongst individuals involved in meal preparation for patients.Methods: A questionnaire with 10 demographic and 35 test items to assess knowledge of GFD, including workplace scenarios encountered in meal preparation, was administered to food handlers including cooks, utility workers, dietary technicians, and supervisors in 2 tertiary care, university-affiliated hospitals. A score of ≥28 of 35 (≥80%) was considered a “pass”.Results: A total of 72 individuals completed the study, mean age 40.3 ± 1.6 years, 75% female. Only 42 (56.8%) scored ≥80% and achieved a pass. The average score was 75.9% ± 13.4%, range 25.7%–100%. The supervisors had significantly higher scores (87.9% ± 11.4%) than utility workers (73.0% ± 11.4%; P = 0.01) and cooks (71.7% ± 14.5%; P = 0.01). Cooks had the lowest scores with 80% scoring <80%. Females scored higher than males (77.8% vs. 68.8%; P = 0.02).Conclusions: There are significant differences in GFD knowledge amongst various groups involved in food preparation in hospitals. The gaps identified in knowledge can potentially compromise the safety of patients with celiac disease. Targeted interventions to educate hospital food handlers about GFD are warranted. Registered Dietitians can play an important role in providing this education.

Purpose: This investigation evaluated food values, food purchasing, and other food and eating-related outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic in Quebec, Canada. The role of stress in eating outcomes was also examined.Methods: An online household survey was conducted among Quebec adults aged ≥18 years (n = 658). Changes in outcomes during, as compared to before, the pandemic were evaluated using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis of free text responses. Eating outcomes by daily stress level (low, some, high) were assessed using Cochran–Armitage test for trend.Results: Most respondents reported increased importance and purchasing of local food products (77% and 68%, respectively) and 60% reported increased grocery spending (mean ± standard deviation: 28% ± 23%). Respondents with a higher daily stress level had a higher frequency of reporting eating more than usual compared to before the pandemic (low stress 21%, some stress 34%, high stress 39%, p-trend <0.0001). Free text responses described more time spent at home as a reason for eating more than usual.Conclusions: To support healthy eating during and post-pandemic, dietitians should consider patients’ mental/emotional well-being and time spent at home. Moreover, support of local food products may provide opportunities to promote healthy eating, sustainability, and post-pandemic resiliency of food systems. - Dragana Misita BSc, RD,

Introduction: Optimizing women’s diets in pregnancy improves maternal and child health outcomes; however, the best format for supporting women’s nutrition goals in pregnancy is not clear, and access to dietetic services is not standard in prenatal care in Alberta. This study explored women’s perceptions about access to Registered Dietitians (RDs) throughout pregnancy and RDs experiences providing prenatal nutrition counselling.Methods: Two studies were conducted. Study A: Pregnant women completed a short survey while attending a prenatal appointment in a large prenatal clinic. The survey assessed women’s perspectives about accessing dietetic services during pregnancy. Survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Study B: RDs participated in either a semi-structured phone interview or a focus group and described their experiences working with pregnant women. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis.Results: One hundred pregnant women completed the survey. Ninety percent indicated that they had not seen a RD at this time in pregnancy, and 48% reported that they would like to access a RD in pregnancy, if available. Dietitians discussed the diversity of women’s concerns and the challenges to providing prenatal nutrition support.Conclusions: Women have nutrition-related questions during pregnancy. Dietitians experience challenges providing services in the current care systems.- Purpose: Our purpose was to explore the experiences of self-identifying Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (2SLGBTQ+) Canadians in treatments for their eating disorders (EDs). By knowing more about their experiences, we hoped to better understand how dietitians and ED service providers can better support 2SLGBTQ+ clients.Methods: Ten self-identifying 2SLGBTQ+ individuals reporting concerns regarding body image or eating patterns, as well as accessing support services or treatments, within Canada were recruited through social media platforms. Participants took part in semi-structured interviews. Data were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic analysis.Results: Four themes are presented: (i) feelings of judgement and otherness, (ii) experiencing shame in EDs and 2SLGBTQ+ identity, (iii) perceiving a lack of understanding and knowledge, and (iv) sharing lived experiences with the care team.Conclusions: Increased focus on trauma-informed approaches to ED treatment in 2SLGBTQ+ populations are indicated so that 2SLGBTQ+ clients feel comfortable to share. Increased education in 2SLGBTQ+ terminology and gender expression is recommended for dietetic professionals. We also recommend increased recruitment efforts for more diverse care teams.
- While conducting nutrition/health research into weight changes during incarceration and related determinants, it became apparent that the correctional setting in Canada was unique and required study design modifications to ensure study success. Consequently, we made many methodological adjustments during recruitment and data collection because of unforeseen challenges in the correctional context. This paper provides an illustrative example and shares insights on the challenges faced when conducting nutrition/health research in Canadian correctional facilities. Guidance on how to adapt research methods to make them more conducive to this unique environment is provided. This paper also highlights the importance of conducting nutrition/health research in this setting, especially given the lack of this type of research and the need for more evidence-based data to guide health promotion and nutritional interventions in Canadian correctional facilities.

Purpose: Barriers in research for women and dietitians have been documented. We sought to describe tri-council funding awarded within the nutrition discipline according to institution type, academic rank, gender, dietitian status, and primary research methods used.Methods: Using an online search methodology, faculty members with research appointments were identified from nutrition departments offering accredited dietetic programs and/or at Canada’s collective of research-intensive universities known as U15. All data regarding faculty members, their institutions, and funding were collected through publicly available websites and Scopus. Tri-council funding associated with the nominated principal investigator, from a 5-year period, 2013–2014 to 2017–2018, was extracted. Binary logistic regression was used to test for predictors of receiving any tri-council operating funds within the 5-year period.Results: Faculty members (n = 237) from 21 institutions were identified for inclusion. Those from U15 institutions, at the full professor rank, nondietitians, men, and those who engaged in primarily quantitative research methods (vs. qualitative or mixed-methods) were significantly more likely to hold any tri-council funding during the eligible period. Dietitians (n = 76) were significantly less likely to hold tri-council funding, independent of institution, rank, gender, and primary research methods utilized.Conclusions: The apparent under-funding of academic dietitians from federal tri-council sources requires exploration.- Purpose: This study examines body satisfaction, weight attitudes, dieting behaviours, and aging concerns of baby boomer women (BBW; born 1946–1965) from rural and urban Manitoba.Methods: Primary data collection occurred November 2015, and 1083 participants completed the Body Image and Food Choice Survey. Four strata of BBW were represented to examine differences between older and younger BBW and location of residence. Multinomial logistic regression models were fit to determine predictors of weight and appearance satisfaction. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were considered significant at p ≤ 0.05.Results: Fifty-three percent of participants were satisfied with their appearance, whereas only 34% were satisfied with their weight. Ninety-one percent desired to lose weight (29.9 ± 29.3 lbs). Aging anxiety was evident for 46% of participants and associated with appearance satisfaction (χ2 = 27.46, df = 4, p < 0.001). Body work and dieting behaviours were used to mitigate body dissatisfaction, and media influence was associated with both appearance (χ2 = 76.17, df = 6, p < 0.001) and weight satisfaction (χ2 = 67.90, df = 6, p < 0.001). Desired weight change, appearance stress, appearance importance, and self-rated health predicted both weight and appearance satisfaction.Conclusions: There is a need for greater awareness of aging women’s body image concerns and the need for age-appropriate tools/resources to help dietitians support women achieve a healthy body image.

Nutrition concerns are prevalent in individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Despite the prevalence of nutrition concerns, few data are available on perceptions and experiences of nutrition interventions in individuals with ALS and their caregivers; this study aimed to collect this information. An online survey was developed and hosted on Survey Monkey®. Individuals with ALS and their caregivers from Saskatchewan, Canada, were invited to complete the survey through email to attendees of the ALS Clinic (Saskatoon, Canada), and via the ALS Society of Saskatchewan Facebook page in February–March, 2021. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Twelve eligible respondents completed the survey (n = 10 individuals with ALS; n = 2 caregivers). The present study found nutrition was important to respondents and there was interest in trying diets and supplements for ALS management; of note, many respondents were interested in exploring the ketogenic diet. Six (50%) respondents had weight loss concerns. All respondents would recommend consulting with a dietitian upon being diagnosed with ALS. Many respondents reported a predefined negative perception of tube feeding. The results of this study suggest that increasing the accessibility of dietitians could positively impact ALS-related care. The findings also provide guidance for dietitians to enhance nutrition care for individuals with ALS.- The home environment and parental influence are strong predictors of eating behaviours in young children and can influence healthy development. The objective of this study was to describe the feeding practices of a sample of families on Prince Edward Island. Eleven parent participants were recruited, one-on-one interviews were held, and a thematic analysis was conducted. Conversations with parents revealed that the family feeding environment is influenced by a multitude of factors that change daily and need to be navigated based on the age of the child. Parents saw family meals as time together and an opportunity to model healthy eating behaviours; however, they faced several challenges at mealtimes, including perceived picky eating. Parents recognized their children’s hunger and satiety cues, although they respected satiety signals more often if children ate what they perceived as a lot of food. Many parents used food as a reward to encourage their children to eat more but recognized that it could lead to the development of undesirable habits. Despite the complex factors that influence feeding, dietitians can work with families to foster a responsive feeding environment by encouraging family meals, recognizing and respecting hunger and satiety cues, and understanding typical changes in eating behaviours as children age.
